Established 1980

About Us

QUALITY
PRIORITY

Established in 1980 by two local farmers and businessmen who were looking at ways to value add to their agricultural business.

In those times there was no market for the small third grade fruit & nuts from the pack houses so they started to do research and develop markets for avocado and macadamia nut oil.

The oil is pressed from good quality third grade fruit.

Over the years from humble beginnings, our technology has been changed & improved to current day where we now use the latest technology and have become one of the largest avocado and macadamia nut oils producers in South Africa.

SAAGA

SAAGA has funded generic promotion of avocados in South Africa since 1999.

SAAGA’s work targets consumers through various media and platforms to educate them on the health aspects and culinary versatility of avocados. A strong local market is vital provides diversification of risk in an export focused industry.

Through cooperation with all the major countries supplying avocados to the EU, as well as exporters and packhouses, SAAGA is able to provide information that allows growers, exporters, packers and importers to plan exports to avoid supply peaks which result in market crashes. Without this information, orderly growth in the market would not be able to take place.

In the early 2000s the European market could only accommodate 600 000 4-kg-cartons per week at reasonable prices. Currently the market is able to accommodate 5.5 million cartons per week.

SAMAC

From humble beginnings in the 1960’s when macadamias were first introduced into the country, the South African macadamia industry has grown into a major world force, competing with Australia in terms of being the largest producer.

SAMAC provides inspirational and innovative leadership to an all-inclusive and aligned South African Macadamia Industry, which through the power of the collective, is built on broad based research, market development and stakeholders engagements.

The 2022 crop of 68 840 tonnes is 28,5% higher than the 2021 crop of 53 858 tonnes. Compared to the 2021 crop, the industry’s production increased with 15 255 tonnes in 2022.

Despite the difficult market conditions being experienced, the silver lining remains that South Africa is still the largest macadamia producing country in the world.

Carbon Footprint

Over the years we have adapted and transformed the way we do business.

As a responsible manufacturer we try as far as possible to minimize our carbon footprint.

We burn the nut shells in all of our boilers instead of using fossil fuels.

Our processes generate zeros waste products. The entire fruit or nut is used in our process for either oil or animal feed or compost.

Our main oil processing facility is already Solar Powered.
Our aim is to solar power all our factories by 2025

Proudly part of the 1 Ha

SAAGA is assisting 6 small avocado farmers to establish 1 ha demonstration blocks on their farms. These blocks have proper soil preparation (including ridging) and trees on root rot tolerant rootstocks.

The aim of the project is to assist these existing small holder avocado farmers so grow to their production so that they can become avocado commercial farmers. Mununzwu Newco partnered with SAAGA doing the soil preparation ridge construction.

Plans are to further expand the project with trees donated by Allesbeste Nursery and inputs from other industry partners
